N.J.A.C. 5:28A Lead-Based Paint Inspections
In accordance with the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs regulation N.J.A.C. 5:28A Lead-Based Paint Inspections in Rental Dwelling Units, all single-family, two-family, and multiple RENTAL dwellings must be inspected, unless exempt. With that in mind, The Township of Cedar Grove has retained LEW Environmental to facilitate these inspections for your convenience.
Property owners may have recently gotten postcards in the mail from LEW Environmental. If you are not at the rental property, please contact the number on the card and inform them you are not a rental, so you can be taken off the list. Rental property owners are free to use an independent contractor for the inspection. A lead-free Certificate must then be submitted to the Township and a $50 processing fee will be collected and tendered to the State of New Jersey.
More information regarding these new regulations can be found on the Department of Community Affairs website.
Immunizations Available
Vaccines are one of the public health’s greatest triumphs. With the exception of safe water, no other health strategy, not even antibiotics, has had such a tremendous effect on reducing disease and improving health. However, vaccine-preventable diseases and deaths still occur in persons of all ages in the US.
Vaccines are responsible for the control of many infectious diseases that were once common in this country. Vaccines have reduced and, in some cases, eliminated many diseases that once routinely killed or harmed tens of thousands of infants, children, and adults.
Did you know that Adults require routine tetanus boosters every 10 years?
Montclair Health Department offers low-cost immunizations for residents of Montclair, Cedar Grove, Verona, Nutley, and Belleville. Registered Nurses under the supervision of a physician administer the vaccines for protection against:
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, (German Measles)
- Meningitis
- Polio
- Tetanus and Diphtheria
- Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis
- Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B
- Shingles
Some of these immunizations are also recommended for travelers to foreign countries. The immunizations will be offered at the Montclair Municipal Building, 205 Claremont Avenue, 3rd floor, in the Health Department. Please call 973-509-4980 for an appointment.
Shingles Vaccine
Shingles is a disease caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. Once you have had chickenpox, the virus remains in your nervous system for many years and can reactivate to cause shingles. Shingles causes a blistering rash on one side of the body that can be very painful. The rash can last up to 30 days and the resulting pain can last from months to years. More than 43 million adults over the age of 60 in the US are at risk for shingles. There are about 1 million new cases per year, half of which are in people 60 and over.
There is now a vaccine for adults 60 years and older to help prevent shingles. It is called Zostavax and is manufactured by MERCK & Co., Inc. It is given by a single dose injection. The vaccine is most effective in preventing shingles in the 60 to 69 age group. In the 70 to 79 age group, it is most effective in preventing pain from shingles. The most frequently reported side effects related to the vaccine were headache and injection site reactions such as redness, and tenderness.
This vaccine is available at the Montclair Health Department Adult Immunization Clinic. The cost of the vaccine is $175. Many health plans have approved reimbursement for Zostavax including Medicare Part D. Depending on your Medicare Part D coverage, you may just be charged a co-pay. Merck makes this vaccine available, free of charge, to eligible individuals who are uninsured and cannot afford vaccines.
Please call the Montclair Health Department at 973-509-4974 for further information about the vaccine or to put your name on the reserved list. Many other adult vaccines are available at the Montclair Health Department including Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and meningitis vaccine, some of which are recommended for travel. Visit the CDC website for vaccine travel information.
